OUR STORY
NOW CELEBRATING OUR 50th ANNIVERSARY!
Nestled at the crossroads of Omaha’s past and present, the Old Mill Centre stands as a testament to innovation and community. Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Centre's legacy is deeply intertwined with the history of the McArdle Mill, established in 1865 along the Big Papillion Creek. This mill not only served as a vital hub for local agriculture but also lent its name to the surrounding area, symbolizing the industriousness of early settlers.
In 1974, as Omaha expanded westward, visionary developers transformed the former mill site into the Old Mill Development. This development marked a significant shift, introducing a blend of retail and community spaces that catered to the evolving needs of the city's residents. Among its early establishments was the Old Mill Lounge, opened by Sam Vacanti—a former Nebraska Cornhuskers quarterback and World War II veteran. Vacanti's lounge quickly became a beloved gathering spot, known for its rustic charm and live jazz performances.
Over the decades, the Centre has undergone numerous transformations, reflecting the dynamic nature of Omaha itself. From its origins as a bustling shopping hub to its current incarnation as a vibrant mixed-use space, the Old Mill Centre has consistently adapted to serve the community's needs. This center is where some of Omaha’s most popular retailers began and grew their success: Jack and Mary’s Restaurant, Imperial Palace, Landon’s Clothing, Flavor Maid Bakery, and Old Mill BBQ to name a few. This legacy of serving the entire metro area continues today and will continue well into the future.
The Centre's commitment to authenticity, community, and resilience is evident in its architecture and atmosphere. Original design elements are still intact and provide a simple but timeless façade that pays homage to its storied past, while modern amenities ensure it remains a relevant and welcoming space for all. 50 years later, the location and visibility at I-680 and the West Dodge Expressway continues to be the best foundation for its continued success, ensuring that the Old Mill Centre continues to be a cornerstone of Omaha's community for generations to come.
